Korean-American Jay trained at Big Hit for 2 years and 11 months before entering Big Hit Labels X Mnet's survival/idol show I-land on June 1, 2020. He has been recognized for his dancing and rap as well as his charismatic leadership. During the show he became renowned for his relentless passion and big heart. In a particularly frustrating moment early on, he coined the phrase “resentment, anger, shame.” Then after being demoted to ground, he stepped up as the leader during test 2 (BTS Fire). Once Jay returned to I-land, he repeatedly proclaimed that he was striving to be ranked first. He did not reach that goal, but he did remain at I-land for the remainder of the show. In the final episode, Jay was ranked second by global voting and joined ENHYPEN to debut later in 2020.
